
Why Short IR Lamps are Killing Your Glass Quality (and How to Fix It)
Most IR lamps stop at about a meter. That sounds like enough until you’re running a massive glass annealing tunnel. When you string together a bunch of short lamps, you get these annoying “cold spots” at every single joint. It’s a nightmare for consistency. We decided to stop fighting that and just make the lamps longer. We build continuous units that go well beyond 2 meters, so your glass gets a steady, even soak across the entire zone. No gaps. No surprises. The struggle with length and voltage You can’t just stretch a piece of quartz and call it a day. The longer the filament, the higher the electrical resistance. If you aren’t careful, the voltage drops and your heat density tanks. We spend a lot of time tweaking the internal filament geometry and voltage to make sure it actually plays nice with your power grid. There’s a delicate balance here. If we just cram too much power into one long tube to hit your temperature, the quartz will bow or—even worse—burn out right in the middle. We calibrate the wattage so the heat stays flat from one end to the other. Building for the real world We use high-purity quartz tubes with special coatings. This isn’t just for show; it shifts the emission spectrum so the heat actually sinks into the glass instead of just scorching the surface. Then there’s the “breathing” problem. A 2-meter tube expands a lot when it gets hot. If your mounting brackets are too tight, the quartz will just snap. It’s a loud, expensive sound you don’t want to hear. We design the housing to give the lamp room to move while keeping everything perfectly aligned. Getting them installed These units are designed to drop right into your existing tunnel frames, replacing those clunky segmented arrays. It means way fewer electrical connections and a much cleaner wiring setup. One quick heads-up: these long units put out a massive amount of energy in one spot. Make sure your cooling blowers are up to the task. You need to move that ambient heat away from the lamp ends, or you’ll end up melting your terminal blocks.
