
Stop Shivering and Kill the Mold: The Real Deal on Infrared Heaters
Most of us think of bathroom heat lamps as that quick fix to stop the shivering when you step out of a hot shower into a freezing room. But if you look under the hood, these things are doing a lot more than just making you feel cozy.
How it actually works
Here’s the thing about regular heaters: they warm up the air. The problem? That warm air hits your cold tiles, creates condensation, and suddenly your bathroom feels like a swamp. Infrared is different. Instead of fighting with the air, it beams heat directly onto your walls and ceiling. It’s like stepping into sunlight. By keeping those surfaces warm, water can’t settle and cling to the tiles. No standing water means no feast for mold spores. Simple as that.
Drying out the “hidden” damp
We all know that damp, musty smell that lingers in a bathroom. It’s usually because moisture is hiding in your grout and paint. While a noisy exhaust fan tries to suck the steam out of the room, infrared lamps go after the water at the source. They basically push the moisture out of the porous surfaces, creating a dry zone. Just a heads-up: don’t go too cheap on the wattage. If you put a tiny lamp in a massive, tiled bathroom, it won’t get the walls warm enough to actually stop the mold. You’ve got to match the power to the size of the room.
A few tips on installation
You can’t just throw these anywhere in the ceiling and call it a day. Placement is a big deal. If you mount the lamp too tight against the ceiling—especially if you have PVC or other materials that don’t love heat—you might warp your fixtures. Not a great look. Give yourself some breathing room. We usually suggest a gap of about 15-20cm. This ensures the heat actually goes where you want it (down toward you and the floor) rather than soaking into your ceiling structure.
