When you’re picking out an infrared heater for the bathroom, your first instinct might be to just go for the most powerful one on the shelf. But here’s the thing: more power isn’t always better. It’s really about finding that sweet spot where the heat matches the size of your room. Bathrooms are tricky. You’re dealing with cold tiles, big glass mirrors, and a lot of humidity that just sucks the warmth right out of the air.
Finding the Right Fit
If you’ve got a tiny powder room—something under 4m²—keep it simple. A 250W to 400W lamp is usually plenty. If you throw a massive 1000W unit in a closet-sized space, the thermostat will just freak out. It’ll click on and off every few seconds, which wears down the hardware and wastes your electricity. For those medium-sized bathrooms (between 4m² and 8m²), you’re looking at something in the 600W to 800W range. Then you have the big master baths. For these, don’t just buy one giant heater. It’s way better to spread the warmth around. Imagine three 400W lamps placed strategically instead of one 1200W beast. It stops those annoying “cold spots” where you’re shivering in one corner while the other side of the room is a sauna.
The “Waterproof” Trade-off
You’ll see “IP44” on the box. All that means is the unit can handle splashes of water without blowing a fuse. To make that happen, we have to use gaskets and protective covers. Now, those covers are great for safety, but they do block a tiny bit of the heat. It’s a small trade-off, but it’s there. Because of that, we usually suggest bumping up your wattage slightly. If the math says you need 500W, go with 600W. It covers the loss from the housing and keeps things cozy.
Saving a Few Bucks
Want to keep your electric bill down? Wire your lamps to separate switches. Think about it: you don’t need every single heater blasting just to wash your hands for thirty seconds. Use a low-wattage lamp to keep the room from freezing, and then fire up the heavy hitters when you’re actually taking a shower and want that instant warmth. Just a quick tip—double-check that your circuit breaker can handle everything running at once, just in case you decide to turn them all on.
